If you’re here, you’re probably trying to get a straight answer to:
“How much is a new bathroom actually going to cost me?”
And I get it, because numbers online felt either vague… or wildly unrealistic.
So instead of fluff, I’m going to give you realistic ranges based on what we actually see day-to-day in Cardiff and South Wales.
What does a bathroom renovation cost right now?
Most full bathroom renovations fall somewhere within these brackets:
£5,000 – £8,000
This is more of a basic refresh:
- Same layout
- Standard suite
- Minimal changes
It works if you just want to tidy things up, but it’s not usually a full transformation.
£8,000 – £15,000
This is where most people land.
- New suite
- Full tiling
- Better finishes
- Possibly some layout tweaks
This is typically the level where it starts to feel like a proper upgrade, not just a replacement.
£15,000+
This is more design-led, higher-end work:
- Layout changes
- Premium materials
- More detailed finishes
Most of the bathrooms we’re involved in sit somewhere in that £8k–£15k range, depending on what’s involved.
A quick note on labour vs materials
Something that often causes confusion:
When people talk about bathroom costs, they’re not always talking about the same thing.
Some quotes you’ll see online are:
- Labour only
- Materials only
- Or a mix of both
Which makes it hard to compare properly.
If you’re just thinking about labour as a rough guide, that’s usually a significant portion of the total cost (often around half or more), depending on the job.
Why the price varies so much
This is the bit that catches people off guard — because two bathrooms that look “similar” on the surface can cost very different amounts.
Here’s why:
Layout changes
Moving things like toilets, showers or pipework sounds simple but it adds time, complexity and cost quickly.
Tiles & finishes
This is a big one.
You can spend a few hundred on tiles or a few thousand, and that’s before labour.
The actual work behind the scenes
A proper renovation isn’t just “fit a bathroom”.
It’s:
- Plumbing
- Tiling
- Electrical
- Oftentimes plastering
The quality of how that’s all pulled together makes a huge difference to the end result.
Older properties (very common in Cardiff)
We see this a lot.
Once things are stripped out, you can uncover:
- Old pipework
- Damp issues
- Things that just weren’t done properly before
Which is why a bit of contingency is always sensible.
Where people tend to get it wrong
A few patterns come up again and again:
- Thinking the materials are the main cost (they’re not — labour is a big part)
- Trying to piece everything together themselves without a clear plan
- Getting quotes without a proper site visit
And then wondering why the numbers don’t line up.
A better way to approach it
If you’re early in the process, this will save you time (and stress):
- Have a rough budget range in mind
- Focus on the outcome you want, not just individual items
- Get someone to actually look at the space before pricing it
It sounds obvious, but it makes a big difference.
A quick note on bathrooms in Cardiff homes
A lot of homes around here:
- Weren’t designed with modern bathrooms in mind
- Have awkward layouts
- Don’t have great ventilation
So a renovation is often about making the space work properly, not just look better.
A well-done bathroom:
- Makes daily life easier
- Solves ongoing issues (such as storage, or awkward layouts)
- Holds up for years
It’s one of those things you use every single day, so when it’s right, you really feel it.
If you’re thinking about renovating:
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
Most people come to us when they’re:
- Trying to understand budget
- Not sure what’s possible in their space
- Or just want someone to sense-check their plans
If that’s where you are, the next step is simple:
We’ll talk it through properly and give you a realistic idea of what’s involved.
